Recycle your Mobile phone and Go GREEN!!!

How many of us have used more than 2 cell phones ? I’m sure most of us, even my younger cousin who’s in high school have got his hands on 3 cell phones by now! But have we ever thought of what happens to all our old phones, which we no longer use ?English: Mobile phone scrap, old decomissioned...

What happens to all the phones after their life cycle is complete ? Lets find out 🙂

Firstly, why should we worry about recycling Mobile phones ?

mobile phone recycling

  1. Responsibility: Yes, as a responsible citizen, it is your duty to dispose something responsibly after use! Be it electronics, plastic or any other waste for that matter.
  2. Save Natural Resources: it’s estimated that for every million cell phones we recycle, 35 thousand pounds of copper, 772 pounds of silver, 75 pounds of gold, and 33 pounds of palladium can be recovered.
  3. Reduce WASTE: According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Americans discard 125 million phones each year, creating 65,000 tons of waste.
  4. Save Energy: If we recycled all the discarded phones every year, we would save enough energy to power 18,500 U.S homes for a year.
  5. Protect Environment: The batteries and electronic components in mobile phones contain heavy metals and other elements like arsenic, barium, beryllium, cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury and selenium, which release toxins thereby polluting air, landfills and even ground water.

How can i recycle my old phone ? Just 3 simple steps.

  1. Walk into an authorized Nokia, Samsung or Apple store

  2. Drop your old mobile phone

  3. Walk out with cool gifts & accessories /Green goodies /even cash rewards*.

What’s more interesting is that there are lots of companies who are putting in lots of their time & resources for Greener Environment.

Nokia‘s initiative to recycle old phones – Planet ke Rakhwaale, has been quite successful in creating awareness about the need to recycle old phones, collecting more than 5,00,000 mobiles.

Samsung is among the first electronics company to introduce a comprehensive consumer take-back programme of old mobile phones in India.

Apple also has taken steps to take back old apple products, by giving a discount on next purchase.

There are other initiatives by Sony, Videocon’s “V Recycle” and few more companies, promising to recycle old mobile phones and appropriate disposal of waste.

With more than 1500 collection centers across the country, it shouldn’t be difficult for us to locate a closest center to drop our old phones for recycling. These big corporations are doing their part slowly, now it’s our turn to contribute to make our country a better Greener place 🙂

Best Video Campaigns for social cause

There are just so many video ads and campaigns made with a lot of creativity to reach out to masses and deliver a simple message for a social cause. Here are some of the best video campaigns which really provoke our thought process to motivate us to think of a solution to these social issues.

  • Campaign against Verbal Abuse: Just a minute’s video shows us the effect of harsh words we use at home, office or anywhere on every individual. This video clearly connects to all age groups, as I’m sure everyone at one point would have experienced this in their life.
  • HIV/AIDS awareness Campaign: SEX, as a taboo in India, some of us is still hesitant to even talk about it. Focused on young youth of the country, it shows video of college guys talk about sex, compelling one of their friends for it. This award winning video definitely motivates us to think beyond sex.
  • The “Jaago Re” Campaign: Even though it helped Tata tea to sell more with a better brand image, it definitely has a strong message, long ignored by each and every one of us. We all complain politicians, scams, etc,. but how many of us have actually taken steps or even cared about it. Campaign aimed at creating awareness youths to VOTE, for better politicians, leaders and for a better tomorrow, makes every citizen feel responsible for actions.
  • Classroom” video by Hindu: Politicians yelling and abusing, fighting, breaking tables and chairs, making a mess of parliament, even watching porn in mobile phone :-P. Shows typical parliamentary behavior, All this while the whole of the country’s eyes are on them and yet they don’t care to bother about their behavior. With a message “Behave yourself INDIA, the youth are watching” clearly shows how our country’s politicians and leaders influence billions in our country.
  • Inspiring Action by Greenpeace: killing of whales, cutting of trees, global warming, you name it and there’s Greenpeace fighting against it. With a simple message “The fragile Earth deserves a voice, It needs a solution, It needs a change, It needs action” inspires us to look at the bigger picture of how each and every action is leading to a larger change on the very globe we live on, and how our future is at stake if we don’t take action now!!!
